ELYRIA — The owner of the Club 57 strip club took a plea deal Wednesday, putting him one step closer to resolving a string of legal issues that have plagued him this year.
David Shapiro, 44, pleaded guilty to attempted child endangering, a charge that could send him to prison for a year when he is sentenced next month by Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Raymond Ewers.
County Prosecutor Dennis Will said he doesn’t anticipate asking for Shapiro, who allowed a 15-year-old Michigan girl to dance at the club, to be locked up.

Last year, county Common Pleas Judge Mark Betleski ruled that Club 57 could remain open as long as the strippers covered their genitalia and portions of their breasts.
But undercover Elyria police officers who visited the club in December and February said the strippers exposed themselves in ways that violated Betleski’s order and offered them private nude dances.

A woman who was leaving her apartment in the 70 block of North Portage Path July 14 around 9:20 a.m. reported her purse was snatched. It contained credit and debit cards, personal papers and medication.
A female reported she was raped by an unknown male July 16 between 2:45 and 3:40 a.m. at a North Portage Path location.
Four male suspects allegedly entered a residence in the 1700 block of Cromwell Drive July 16 around 3:45 p.m. One suspect drew a gun on the male victim, who was forced to strip and robbed of a hat, belt, bag, personal papers and a CD player. Everything but the CD player was recovered outside.
A 30-year-old Crosby Street female was arrested for loitering to solicit prostitution July 18 around 6:15 p.m. at Crosby and Balch streets. She reportedly had warrants out for the same charge and admitted accepting money in exchange for sex acts.

Two Cuyahoga County men accused of Internet child sex crimes
CLEVELAND — Two men were indicted Monday in separate cases investigated by the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC).
Rodney Callender, 45, of Cleveland, is accused of soliciting sex from an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old girl. He will be arraigned Aug. 3.
Cuyahoga County prosecutors said that Callender sought sex 10 times between Jan. 29 and March 8 from the undercover Maryland State police officer posing as a 14-year-old girl. Callender said that he wanted to meet the teen in Columbia, Maryland. He did not make the trip, but he’s charged with importuning and possessing criminal tools — his computer. Callender pleaded guilty to a similar offense in 1992 in Michigan, prosecutor’s spokesman Ryan Miday said.

Defense attorney Mike Duff said Mattei also received a 90-day driver’s license suspension, but that ended Thursday because his client’s license has been suspended since his arrest. Mattei had work driving privileges during that suspension, Duff said.
“He’s glad it’s over and behind him,” Duff said.
Lorain Safety Director Phil Dore said Mattei, who took vacation after his arrest before returning to work, won’t face punishment from the city.
“What he did on his off time has no impact on his job,” Dore said. As a civil service employee, Mattei doesn’t fall under Mayor Tony Krasienko’s personal staff and wouldn’t be subject to Krasienko’s edict that he would fire any of his employees convicted of a crime.
“We couldn’t fire him if we wanted to,” Dore said.
Mattei was the third city official to face a DUI charge in the past year. Councilman Dennis Flores, D-2nd Ward, pleaded no contest to charges after he was arrested for trying to pick up a prostitute while drunk.
