Cleveland Strip Clubs: SCENE/DOBAMA "10 MINUTES" CONTEST WINNER: FIRE AND ICE
It was raining. Not your rock and roll thunderstorm, just a cool, steady downpour, something to knock the leaves off the trees on a quiet October night. The year was 1983 and I was sitting at the bar of a strip club on Clark off West 44th next to the firehouse. I was working for the RTA back then and had been sent over to the west side to see if the weather would break so we could perform some needed track work. Standard operating procedure was to wait one hour, then call the boss for his instructions. In those prehistoric, pre-cell phone days this involved using the nearest land line. Mine just happened to be in a place where girls did acrobatics they’d never learned in gym class. After the third call my boss said, “Forget it. Go home.” I liked that idea because three beers was my limit and I was already on number seven.
Cleveland Escorts: Canvas of Conscience
One of these artist “friends” was none other than Jacob Lawrence, who The New York Times called “one of America’s leading modern figurative painters” and “among the most impassioned visual chroniclers of the African-American experience” when he died in 2000. Two of Lawrence’s works owned by the Schillers were displayed for a time at the Art Institute of Chicago, flanking the iconic Grant Wood painting “American Gothic.”
“Street Scene – Restaurant” is one of Lawrence’s early works and portrays a black woman propositioning a white man on the street in front of a restaurant. The white man sheepishly hunches behind his collar, looking to see if anyone else sees the drama playing out, as he reaches in his pocket. Who is in control of this business transaction?
“Interior Scene” is a companion piece to “Street Scene,” and it is both humorous and matter-of-fact – the white man is now inside the brothel, flies buzz around a lamp, rats scurry across the floor, and business is transacted beneath a portrait of a Madonna and child.
Cleveland Escorts: Census survey has something to rile everyone
Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., member of a House Census subcommittee, says there were similar mailings in 2000, but “arguments are now much more extreme. We now have people saying that a settled area of constitutional law, that the Census must count every person in the country, is somehow fake.”
•The Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), a national group that had been one of 80,000 unpaid partners to help the agency promote participation. The relationship was attacked by conservatives, including Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck. The House voted last week to cut all federal funding to the group after ACORN employees were caught on video advising a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute how to lie about their jobs and hide earnings.

Cleveland Escorts: Tricked-Out Golf Carts Swarm Florida Communities
The diminutive vehicles are the primary mode of transportation for daily life here. Residents can drive them just about everywhere they need to go. They whiz along 87 miles of trails, from the Walmart to the town squares, from the hospital to the archery range. When they have to cross the six-lane US 27/US 441 highway, no sweat—they take the specially built golf cart overpass. “We don’t like to call them our golf carts,” a retiree named Warren Cromer tells me. “They’re our second car.”
Second cars with massive upgrades. Villagers have tricked out their carts to look like 1930s roadsters, fire trucks, and stretch limos. The hottest ride in town is currently a canary-yellow imitation of a Hummer H3 with alligator interior, undercarriage lighting, and a 1,400-watt stereo. The most obsessed drivers have spent upwards of $20,000 pimping their rides: Villagers trade up for bigger tires, swap computer codes to overclock their batteries, and hack their motors to bypass built-in speed caps. Standard carts typically top out at around 20 miles per hour, but a little tweaking can boost that to as much as 40.

Cleveland Strip Clubs: Figure in ODOT corruption probe arraigned, other defendant sentenced
Bauer had already pleaded guilty Aug. 11 to one felony count of bribery and one felony count of attempted tampering with records.
In Kratochvil’s arraignment today, prosecutors said he made a menacing phone call to a witness, who is another defendant in the ODOT case, on Sept. 14 while that witness was in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Prosecutors said the defendant went on to plead guilty to bribery and and theft in his own case.
The Ohio Inspector General released a report Oct. 16, 2008, that named Kratochvil as the main person in a longtime scheme of bid-rigging and fraud at ODOT’s District 12’s offices.
Vendors were also involved, allegedly “buying” contracts with vacations, fishing trips, money and strippers, and Kratochvil was named with a handful of other ODOT employees as being involved.

Cleveland Strip Clubs: Former ODOT manager Dennis Kratochvil collapses in jail cell
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason said Kratochvil, 64, was indicted earlier Wednesday after investigators traced a menacing phone call received by a defendant who will also serve as a witness in the case. Mason said that as the defendant sat in a courtroom Monday preparing to plead guilty to bribery and theft, an anonymous person called his cell phone and ordered him to “plead the Fifth” if he valued his health and safety.
The defendant immediately reported the threat and still pleaded guilty. Prosecutors declined to identify the victim, but James Bright, 71, of North Royalton, pleaded guilty Monday and will be sentenced Oct. 20. He faces two years in prison. He owns Bright Chemical.
Ohio’s inspector general released a report last October following an 18-month investigation that placed Kratochvil at the helm of decade-long practices of bid-rigging and fraud that may have cost the state millions. Vendors plied high-ranking local ODOT officials with cash, vacations and sex with strippers in return for state contracts.

Whitehouse defends vote to continue funding ACORN
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) was one of seven senators who voted to continue using federal money to fund American Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN), a union backed group, earlier this week.
Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), voted to strip ACORN of the federal funding.
ACORN is suffering a public relations nightmare after two conservative activists posing as a prostitute and a pimp entered an ACORN office asking for advice on how to account for a house on tax forms and how to shelter money from taxes. The ACORN employees gave advice on how what to list the girl’s occupation as on tax forms.
The two also said they planned on sex trafficking minors from Venezuela, and ACORN employees advised them to list the minors as dependents on tax forms.
Cleveland Adult Entertainment: Former ODOT employee indicted for threat
… He threatened harm of the state’s witnesses if that witness testified for the state against him in the ODOT corruption case,” Miday said.
Kratochvil, who served as facilities manager for the Garfield Heights ODOT office, is scheduled to be arraigned today.
The ODOT investigation began after a former employee of North Shore Door in Elyria sent an e-mail to state officials complaining about how contracts were awarded at the office where Kratochvil worked. That e-mail led to a massive probe by Ohio Inspector General Tom Charles, who released a 69-page report last year detailing contract-steering and bribery at the Garfield Heights ODOT office.
The reported laid out numerous allegations, including accusations of strippers, ODOT workers and vendors taking day-long boat trips, expensive Christmas parties at Cleveland strip clubs, and bribes ranging from hunting trips and guns to cash payments and the selling of stolen ODOT equipment by employees.
