Cleveland: Local ACORN office copes with national scandal
CLEVELAND — The couple impersonating a pimp and prostitute who set off a scandal involving the community organizing group ACORN did not visit the group’s Cleveland office, but the fallout is being felt here.
The couple, a conservative independent videographer and his companion, visited a batch of ACORN offices pretending to be operators of a brothel.
At four different offices, the pair managed to be shot in undercover video getting advice from ACORN staffers how to dodge paying income tax and discussed making money from underage hookers.
Mariah Crenshaw, of the Cleveland ACORN board, said, “They were isolated incidents. We do not train our people to do anything immoral or illegal. We try to provide free services to low-income people.”
The group’s main issues in Cleveland are helping foreclosure victims, addressing dangers of lead paint, and working to promote a higher minimum wage.

Dennis Kratochvil, former ODOT manager and target of corruption probe, accused of intimidating witness
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Dennis Kratochvil, the 64-year-old former Ohio Department of Transportation District 12 facilities manager and the primary target in a corruption case, was arrested last night after he was charged with witness intimidation.
State Highway Patrol officers arrested Kratochvil at his home in Chagrin Falls. He was indicted on the new charge earlier Wednesday. Prosecutors said Kratochvil intimidated a witness in the ODOT corruption case.
Ohio’s inspector general released a report last October after an 18-month investigation that accused Kratochvil and others of participating bid-rigging and fraud in a decade-long scheme that may have cost the state millions.
Investigators accused Kratochvil and others of giving state contracts to vendors in exchange for cash, vacations and sex with strippers during Lake Erie fishing trips.

Wednesday night, Fox News obtained a copy of a video in which one of the National City ACORN workers advising the filmmaker on how to smuggle underage girls from Mexico, as well as the worker inquiring about the price of the services from the woman acting as the prostitute.
David Lagstein with California ACORN confirmed the video is real.  He said the employee in that video is Juan Carlos Vera. “Our staff member in question says that doesnt capture what happened,” said Lagstein, “They succeeded in getting our staff members to say things they shouldn’t have said. We need to see the full video to see what happened.

James Bright became the eighth person to plead guilty in the widening corruption scandal at the Ohio Department of Transportation office in Garfield Heights.
Prosecutors have alleged that vendors, such as Bright, paid bribes to former ODOT officials in exchange for state business.
The bribes included the now infamous “ODOT Boat Days” – where vendors took officials on lake excursions complete with strippers.
Prosecutors say Bright did not take part in the boat days.
The first men who entered guilty pleas will be sentenced in two weeks. Prosecutors have yet to file charges against the men thought to be the ringleaders.
In all, prosecutors say up to thirty-seven people may eventually face charges.

North Royalton businessman pleads guilty in ODOT bribery case
CLEVELAND, Ohio — An eighth man admitted today to being involved in the steering of Ohio Department of Transportation contracts from 2000 through 2007.
James Bright, 71, of North Royalton, pleaded guilty to bribery and theft. The owner of Bright Chemical will be sentenced Oct. 20. He faces two years in prison.
He is one of several vendors who plied officials at ODOT’s District 12 office in Garfield Heights with cash, vacations and sex with strippers on Lake Erie fishing trips in return for state contracts.
A ninth defendant, Mark O’Donnell, 60, of Elyria, is charged with bribery and due in court Sept. 23. Christian Hilty, 51, of Chagrin Falls, pleaded guilty to theft and will be sentenced the same day.

Hanging Out With “Idol” Stars. When the American Idol tour came through Cleveland on Sunday, the press had a chance to meet with five of the performers: Anoop Desai, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre and Michael Sarver. (The tour rotates which stars meet with reporters in different cities.)
Nice folks one and all. And I was curious about what music they’re listening to now that they’re out of the Idol bubble and on the road.
Desai mentioned Jazmine Sullivan, Maxwell and Keri Hilson, while Iraheta brought up Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kings of Leon and Keyshia Cole.
Sarver said Robin Thicke, Rascal Flatts and Michael Buble, adding that “it’s interesting that anyone thought they could pin me down to one [country] genre.” Lambert seized on Peaches, Lady Gaga, Muse and IAMX. He thinks IAMX — formerly of Sneaker Pimps — is “amazing.”
