Some of the gambling tax will also be used to pay off Pittsburgh’s new hockey arena, which is under construction. Casino operators and the city’s sports authority recently signed a deal that will set aside $7.5 million a year for 30 years to help pay off the arena debt, according to a story in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Part of the problem, Ravenstahl said, is that the slots-only casino draws an older crowd, which perceives that the downtown location may be unsafe.
Older gamblers might prefer a West Virginia casino that’s only 45 minutes away, he said.
“They just assumed that if you build it, they will come,” Ravenstahl said of casino operators.
On the other hand, the casino is a “gorgeous facility” that has seen little of the heightened crime critics feared, such as theft and prostitution, the mayor said.

Antoinette Nicole Davis moved six days ago from the Cumberland County Detention Center to Raleigh’s North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women for her own safety.  The move was slowly leaked to media sources after Antoinette Davis had left the Cumberland County Detention Center.  However, the latest Antoinette Davis update should be no surprise.
North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women is located on 1304 Bragg Street in Raleigh, just 2.44 miles from Raleigh’s Central Prison where Mario McNeill is being held.  If Antoinette Davis had been sent to Raleigh’s Correctional Center for Women on State Street she would have only been 2.34 miles from Raleigh’s Central Prison.  However, both prisons are equipped to keep inmates highly monitored.
Antoinette Davis, 25, was charged with human trafficking, felony child abuse involving prostitution of 5-year-old Shaniya Davis, filing a false police report, and interfering with an investigation resulting in two felony and two misdemeanor charges.
