A prosecutor in Ohio says a self-styled chaplain suspected in the Craigslist slayings will be charged with murder and could face the death penalty.
The announcement came Monday in Akron from Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. She says her office will press murder and attempted murder charges against 52-year-old Richard Beasley. He’s locked up in Akron on unrelated prostitution and drug charges.
Three deaths are under investigation in the alleged plot to lure victims with a phony Craigslist job ad.
Beasley has denied any involvement. A teen acquaintance of his from Akron has been charged with murder.
The prosecutor says local and federal officials signed off on the agreement to let her office take the lead.

Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said local officials in southeast Ohio and state and federal officials signed off on an agreement to let her office take the lead against Richard Beasley, 52. Three deaths and the wounding of a fourth man are under investigation in a plot to lure victims with the promise of a farm job in southeast Ohio.
“In deciding where and how to try this case, our primary concern was doing what is in the best interest of the victims and their families,” said Walsh, who noted that most of the victims are from the Akron-Canton area of northeast Ohio.
Beasley, who has been jailed in Akron on unrelated prostitution and drug charges, has denied involvement in the Craigslist slayings. An email message seeking comment was sent Monday to his attorney handling the drug case.

Undercover sting in Alliance ends in arrests of two suspected prostitutes and a pimp
Posted: 12/01/2011
Two alleged prostitutes and a pimp were arrested after a two-month investigation into a website listing Alliance as a service area.
The sting happened Wednesday night and involved the Alliance, Sebring, Smith Township and Akron police departments.
Alliance police said they received tips that women were placing ads that appeared to be for prostitution on websites, primarily on backpage.com – a free classifieds site.

So on Wednesday, an undercover officer placed calls from an Alliance motel in response to the ads. As a result, two women were arrested after police said they came to the hotel and offered the officer sex in exchange for money. A man allegedly working as one woman’s pimp was also taken into custody.

The legal problems faced by Beasley, a 52-year-old self-styled chaplain and youth mentor, are mounting: His attorney said a prostitution case involving Beasley and a 17-year-old boy would be upgraded with a racketeering charge Friday.
The drug and prostitution cases in Akron are unrelated to a widening Craigslist homicide investigation.
In that case, 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty, of nearby Stow, faces juvenile charges of aggravated murder, complicity to aggravated murder, attempted murder and complicity to attempted murder in the death of one man and the shooting of another.

The bond revocation in the drug case for failing to appear for a Sept. 6 trial and the $1 million bond in the prostitution case allow authorities to hold Beasley as the Craigslist investigation continues.
A 15-count count indictment returned Wednesday charges Beasley with promoting prostitution and, in the case of a 17-year-old boy, compelling prostitution. The teen’s involvement occurred from early November 2009 through late December 2010, the indictment said.

In a handwritten letter to the Beacon Journal, Beasley also took issue with his portrayal by friends as a Christian “con man” who used his position as a chaplain and halfway house operator as a front for prostitution and drug dealing.
“ … to call me a con man when I sacrificed for others is wrong,” Beasley wrote. “To turn their back on me is not following Christ’s example. I gave three full years of my life to that ministry and what I got out of it was the satisfaction of doing the right thing.

Beasley’s head bobbed up and down slowly as attorneys talked with Judge Tammy O’Brien. In addition to the drug trafficking case, Beasley is facing a multi-count indictment on prostitution charges. Akron police vice detectives contend his Yale Street halfway house was a ruse to allow prostitution.

AKRON, Ohio — The man accused in the recent Craigslist slayings needed a wheelchair to get to court today on unrelated drug and prostitution charges.
Richard Beasley, 52, of Akron, looked frail as he bobbed his lowered head, never looking up at Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tammy O’Brien or the attorneys in the case. Though he walked into the courtroom without help, Beasley sought the use of a wheelchair. His attorney said Beasley’s mother feared her son was suffering from symptoms of a stroke.
Beasley is accused of selling Oxycontin to authorities in November 2010. This week, a Summit County grand jury indicted him on 15 counts of prostitution-related charges, including compelling a 17-year-old boy “to engage in sexual activity for hire,” according to the indictment. He also is expected to be charged with racketeering involving the prostitution case, Jay Cole, an assistant Summit County prosecutor, told O’Brien.

… A man linked to Ohio’s Craigslist killings was in a wheelchair with his head rocking rhythmically as he went before a judge in an unrelated matter.
His attorney said 52-year-old Richard Beasley felt weak Thursday and deputies in Akron provided the wheelchair. Lawyer Rhonda Kotnik says Beasley’s mother fears he suffered a stroke.
Beasley mentored a 16-year-old boy charged in what authorities say was a lethal robbery scheme using a bogus Craigslist job ad to lure victims. A complaint against the teen says he participated in the crimes with Beasley.
Beasley did not speak in court Thursday and did not respond outside to a shouted question of whether there were more bodies.
He was indicted Wednesday in a prostitution case in which he has been jailed on $1 million bail.
