Victoria is trying to hang onto leading-lady status even as she is being asked to audition for roles as Megan Fox’s grandmother.
When a flight attendant says her grandmother once watched her soap, Victoria replies acidly, “Oh. I wish that was sweet.”
Flight turbulence forces them to take a detour to Cleveland, where these three California girls of a certain age are amazed to discover that men find them attractive.
“They’re looking at us,” Melanie marvels. “In Los Angeles, they look past us.”
“We appear to have landed in a dimension where men hit on women their own age,” Joy notes. “We owe it to science to investigate.”
After an out-of-character one-night stand, Melanie decides to stay in the Midwest and rents a house that comes complete with an 80-year-old bat – cranky Elka (White), who first thinks the women must be prostitutes.

Bertinelli, Leeves and Malick are all likable pros who know how to milk a punchline or sight gag for all it’s worth. Malick embraces her character’s two-dimensionality, and Leeves has a funny bit of physical comedy where Joy wakes up hung over and discovers that her pores contain reminders of a a night of beer and greasy bar snacks.
“Hot in Cleveland” really only comes to life, though, when Betty White is on stage as  Elka Ostrovsky. She has no reason for being there other than that she’s Betty White, but in this, The Year of Betty White, that’s more than enough. She greets her new co-stars by asking the realtor, “Why are you renting to prostitutes?” and when Joy suggests that she can smell marijuana, Elka barks out, “What are you, a cop?” Joy says, “No,” and White’s eyes narrow as she asks, “Then what’s it to you?”

Sean Hayes, of “Will and Grace” fame (and the unintentional focus of a recent flap over a Newsweek article on the non-question of whether gays can play straight; Hayes hosts Sunday’s Emmys) is the producer. “Frasier” writer Suzanne Martin is in attendance.
After the Brass Girls all get their taglines and funny bits in the pilot (the best: Jane Leeves, the morning after, licking last night’s french fry grease out of the pores on her forearm), White comes on in a pink track suit as the “caretaker” of a rented house in Cleveland, where they all decide to “summer.”
White gets laugh-track giggles by calling them all prostitutes. Leeves makes nasty Oprah and Maya Angelou jokes until coming right out to ask White, “What’s the deal with old ladies and track suits?”

Police arrested two people last week that they described as professional burglars. Detectives are trying to link them to multiple burglaries, said Sgt. Sammy Morris, a police spokesman.
The 3rd Police District, which includes downtown and the near East Side, and the two other East Side districts have also seen an increase in thefts.
Residential burglaries have either dropped or held close to the line this year in Shaker Heights, Fairview Park, Parma and Lakewood. However, police officials have braced themselves for increases when schools recess for the summer.
The most serious crimes — murders, robberies and assaults — are down all over Cleveland. Citations for quality-of-life issues also dropped through mid-May compared with the same period last year. Drug, prostitution, night curfew, noise and open-container tickets decreased between 11 percent and 35 percent. Morris attributed the decline to police targeting trouble spots.

Meet The Cleveland Man Who Inherited Mike Brown’s Cell Phone Number
I’ve always wondered how cell phone companies handle this sort of thing. When people change their phone numbers… Do the phone companies just recycle old numbers? Like, if I end my service with AT&T this afternoon, will some random dude have my cell phone number by tomorrow morning?
I’m sure there are rational ways to answer this question, but it’s far easier to leave it open-ended and wonder. What if you inherited a prostitute’s cell phone? For the most part, the wild-style treatment bore glorious fruit. The Finale soared on the sparks between conductor and orchestra. Like the music itself, the performance was restless. No less exciting was the Scherzo, with wondrously soft patter in the strings and bright, resolute calls by the horns.
Even more fulfilling was the Funeral March. There, Welser-Most held the orchestra at a steady simmer, conserving momentum while allowing details like the resonant rumbling of the basses to emerge in stark definition. In this atmosphere, the fugue came off like a low earthquake, the powerful result of clashing musical strata.
Only in the opening Allegro did Welser-Most’s approach seem questionable. The brisk pace and tendency to accelerate tainted the excitement, injecting an air of haste into a performance otherwise notable for its nobility of spirit.
On the drama scale, few scores rank higher than Berg’s opera, “Lulu,” tracing a prostitute’s debauchery-filled rise and ultimately gruesome fall. Next to this, Beethoven’s tribute to human resolve almost seems tame.
