Anchor Linda Wertheimer explained, “In Ohio today, a trial gets underway in the biggest public corruption case the state’s ever seen. Jimmy Dimora rose from sanitation worker to commissioner of Cuyahoga County, which includes Cleveland and its suburbs. He’s accused of being at the center of a number of bribery schemes that federal investigators uncovered in recent years.”
Reporter Kevin Niedermayer of local affiliate WKSU added, “Jimmy Dimora is charged with being a kingpin, running a Boss Tweed-style criminal enterprise out of the county’s administration building. Prosecutors say He accepted home improvements, trips, appliances, meals and even prostitutes in exchange for millions of dollars in county contracts.”

Dimora, now clean-shaven and his hair noticeably grayer, entered the courthouse with his wife.
Jury selection is set to begin in the trial today and testimony will likely begin on Monday.
The charges against Dimora are found in a 37-count, 148-page federal indictment, but basically say that the long-time power  broker used his county commissioner’s office as the base to run a criminal enterprise.
The charges say that he not only defrauded the public, but sold his position  to enrich himself and his friends.
The indictment also says Dimora received bribes and kickbacks, trips, home improvements and appliances, meals, entertainment, jewelry, lodging and prostitutes. In exchange, the charges state, Dimora steered government contracts, grants and loans, jobs and pay raises. He’s also accused of fixing court cases and favoring his benefactors in dealings with the county.

AKRON, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy who faces trial as an adult in a deadly Craigslist robbery scheme has been moved to an adult jail that can house juveniles in a separate unit.
Brogan Rafferty, who had been held at a juvenile detention center, is charged with killing one man and attempting to kill another who answered a Craigslist ad for a bogus job in southeast Ohio’s Noble County.
A second suspect, Richard Beasley, 52, a self-styled chaplain and mentor to the teen, is jailed on unrelated drug and prostitution charges. Summit Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh has pledged to seek the death penalty against Beasley.
Rafferty, a junior at suburban Stow-Munroe Falls High School, has been transferred to the Summit County Jail, where the administrator told the Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/ttjHbU ) that the jail meets requirements that Rafferty be kept separate from adult inmates, unlike the Noble County Jail.

If charges are filed against Richard Beasley, 52, of Akron, in the Craigslist investigation of murder and attempted murder, Walsh said her office will prosecute the case. The prosecutor’s office said it plans to seek the death penalty against Beasley if charged.
The teen and Beasley are suspects for their alleged involvement with two deaths and injuring a man in southern Ohio and the death of a man in Summit County.
“In trying the case in Summit County, we will ensure the surviving victim and the families of the other victims do not suffer through multiple lengthy trials and will provide a more convenient location for at least some of the families and the surviving victim,” said Walsh.
Beasley is currently being held on $1 million bond for unrelated charges: aggravated trafficking of drugs and prostitution. He has a court date set for Dec. 22.

“In deciding where and how to try this case, our primary concern was doing what is in the best interest of the victims and their families,” said Walsh, who noted that most of the victims are from the Akron-Canton area.
Beasley, who has been jailed in Akron on unrelated prostitution and drug charges, has denied involvement in the Craigslist slayings. Email and phone messages seeking comment were left Monday for his attorney handling the drug case.

Summit Co. Prosecutor Takes on ‘Craigslist Murders’
AKRON — The Summit County prosecutor will prosecute 52-year-old Richard Beasley for three murders and one attempted-murder tied to a deadly Craigslist job ad, ABC6/Fox28 News’ Dana Jay reported Monday.
That is, once Beasley is charged. He’s currently being held for 15 counts of promoting prostitution and one count of selling Oxycontin stemming from offenses in Texas.
Beasley will be charged with murder, Summit Co. Prosecuting Attorney Sherri Bevan Walsh confirmed Monday. She said he could even face the death penalty.
Beasley’s alleged accomplice — 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty — however, has been charged with murder and attempted murder connected to the phony Craigslist ad.
Authorities say the two conspired in posting the phony ad to lure people in. Why, though, remains a mystery. Some reports allege it concerned robbery or identity theft or, simply, a thrill-kill.
