In April 2000, actor Louis Gossett Jr. dropped a paperback, purchased at a yard sale, on director Frank Martin’s desk. The book told the story of black soldiers who fought in defense of their country.
“As soon as I saw it, I thought this would make a good documentary,” said Martin, who is based in Encino, Calif.
