PROSTITUTION in Middlesbrough may be as prolific as ever despite a police crackdown, it was claimed today.
Many vice girls are now peddling their trade behind closed doors after a police blitz on kerb-crawlers wiped out much of the street business, a former prostitute told the Gazette.
And there may be as many women selling their bodies – now striking deals over mobile phones – as before in Middlesbrough, one campaigner said.
However, Cleveland Police chiefs said that, while some prostitutes had moved indoors, they denied there were the same numbers working now compared to six years ago.

But one former prostitute, who started working the streets aged 16, claimed there were as many vice girls as ever. The woman, who sold her body to feed a heroin and crack cocaine habit, is now clean and working in a bar.
