Judge Jean Murrell Capers talks of Christmases past and her worries about Cleveland’s present: Phillip Morris

Judge Jean Murrell Capers was sipping on a cup of hot water and filling out the last of her Christmas cards Thursday morning, when I slid into the diner seat beside her.
“It’s kinda late for that isn’t?” I said, eyeballing the sausage and piece of toast left sitting on her plate. It’s probably criminal, but I sometimes “share” her food when she’s distracted.
“No. It’s not too late since I’m hand-delivering them to the people that work in this restaurant,” she said. She then shot me a glance that seemed to say, “Why don’t you try staying out of adult business, young man?”
Judge Capers is probably the greatest living Clevelander I’ve met. She’s a walking encyclopedia. Her grasp of contemporary events is remarkably studied. And, what I love the most, she’s just downright feisty at 96-years-old.
