One of these artist “friends” was none other than Jacob Lawrence, who The New York Times called “one of America’s leading modern figurative painters” and “among the most impassioned visual chroniclers of the African-American experience” when he died in 2000. Two of Lawrence’s works owned by the Schillers were displayed for a time at the Art Institute of Chicago, flanking the iconic Grant Wood painting “American Gothic.”
“Street Scene – Restaurant” is one of Lawrence’s early works and portrays a black woman propositioning a white man on the street in front of a restaurant. “Interior Scene” is a companion piece to “Street Scene,” and it is both humorous and matter-of-fact – the white man is now inside the brothel, flies buzz around a lamp, rats scurry across the floor, and business is transacted beneath a portrait of a Madonna and child.
