Getting back to scripted productions, actress Lori Petty (A League of Their Own) makes an impressive debut as a director with The Poker House (Phase 4 Films, $29.99), which she also co-wrote based on her own youth. Even more impressive is the performance by Jennifer Lawrence as Agnes, the character based on Petty.
Agnes and her two sisters live in the “poker house” — a hangout for lowlifes — with their drugged-out mother (Selma Blair) and her pimp boyfriend (Bokeem Woodbine). Agnes is managing to make a bearable life for herself and her sisters, but the temptations and terrors of the world around her are hard to overcome.
